ABOUT KONIA

Konia (Sonja Oberosler) was born and raised in Germany and immigrated to the United State in 1955. She worked as a life insurance executive in Denver, Colorado, has one son and two Grandchildren.

In 1965 she experienced Hawaii for the first time. "The Island of Hawaii and its people were like a magnet for me" and she returned many times to pursue her interests in the Hawaiian Fiber arts. Thoughts of the Hawaiian Quilts never left her mind and in 1983, upon her retirement, she was able to realize her dream to move to "her" island and to further her studies of Hawaiian quilting. She earned her degree from Master Quilter Deborah U. Kakalia in Honolulu. She continuously expresses the desire to preserve and perpetuate the art of Traditional Hawaiian Quilting and is in great demand as a teacher and quiltmaker. She prefers to work with the old designs, but occasionally likes to create designs of her own.
